Area Artists Association Celebrates its 44nd Anniversary
“It’s All About the Square” an exhibition at the Chesterton Art Center November 2 – December 2, 2024
Public Reception: Saturday, November 9th, 12-2pm (CST)
To celebrate its 44th Anniversary, the Area Artists Association (A3)challenged its members to submit artwork addressing the themeIt’s all About the Square. Their submissions, on display at the Chesterton Art Center, tackle the topic in creative ways, pushing the boundaries of what a “Square” might be.
“The Square goes as far back as the Egyptians 5,000 years ago” according to Carol Estes. “The Square creates a foundation and stable defined space, and a vision for the artist. The Square can raise the scale, evoke emotion with color, and tell many stories. Our Area Artists will take the mind’s eye on many journeys.”
Participants in this exhibition are members of the Area Artists Association, a regional association of professional artists. Through its regular exhibitions, it provides communities throughout the northwest Indiana region access to the diversity of work produced by area artists.
“Chesterton Art Center (CAC) regularly features works from Area Artists and its members who individually and collectively have been part of our organizational fabric for decades,” said Hannah Hammond-Hagman, CAC executive director.
Among the 24 featured artists are: Tom Brand and Carole Stodder (Pines); Larry Brechner, Donna Hapac, and Kristina Knowski (Chesterton); Deb Dyer (New Buffalo), Amanda Freymann, Larry Jensen, and Kevin Firme (Beverly Shores), Christine Hubbell (Westville), Teresina Pavel (Gary), Dorothy Graden (Valparaiso); Jane Cowley, ANKO (Anneke Dekker), Bunny Dimke, Diane Grams, Timothy D. Lace, Laurel Izard and Suzy Vance (Michigan City); Carol Estes and Ginny Scott (LaPorte); Kuhn Hong (Chicago); Connie Kassal and George Kassal (Long Beach).
“A3 has created over 60 member shows since its first exhibit in the old Carnegie library on 8th Street in Michigan City that was the original home of Michigan City’s first art center,” said founding member Connie Kassal, . “Over the decades, member exhibits have expanded to include museums and gallery spaces across northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan.”
“Area Artists Association is a dynamic group that provides valuable communal support through the sharing and exchanging of ideas,” according Linda Weigel in her introduction to the group’s 2024 catalog.
A public reception is scheduled for Saturday, November 9th, from 12-2 pm (CST); refreshments will be served.
